Why Linux.

I got many reasons. We will discuss it in details here.

Open Source Free Operating System. Yup! Linux is completely free unlike Windows and Mac OS X where you have to pay quite a good amount for using their services. Its open source too. That means you have the access to hundreds of thousands of lines of codes in which Linux has been written and if you are a techie and can handle all those codes on your own or may be just a part of it, you can customize it to suite yours personal choices. Although you must be a real geek for that.!!

virus free
Less prone to virus and malwaresCan you think of running your windows system without an anti-virus? No. You can't. But that's not the case with Linux. Its almost virus free. You don't need a $50 antivirus just to run your system safe and keep updating every day. Neither you have to schedule scans on regular basis.

Low resource needed. Linux needs much less resource to run on your system. You must have experienced the sluggish behavior of windows after 3 month use. The system becomes slow, with lots of program crashing. That's not gonna happen with Linux. You will remain with the same speed even after a year of use with your system not slowing down for a bit.

Linux is where!! Today, more than 90 percent of supercomputers including the top tens, more than half of all the smartphones, millions of desktop computers, 70 percent of web servers, tablets, dvd players etc uses Linux. That's more than enough for you to be a part of it.

Linux Evolution journey. All modern operating systems have their roots from the Unix operating system developed in 1969 at AT&T Bell Labs. It was open source then, with the rest of the world. And then AT&T start selling Unix commercially. It agitated Richard Stallman. He started a project called GNU, an acronym for GNU's Not Unix. His goal was to make an operating system that was freely available to everyone. In Nineties, a Finnish student Linus Torvalds, a swedish speaking guy, bought a 386 computer and wrote a brand new kernel. He put the source code online. And the rest was history. He developed the kernel of today's 'linux' and  thousands of developers have all supported the project with enthusiasm and efforts.

There are different distributions of Linux, all completely free. A huge database of softwares which are both fee and open source.

Is Linux difficult?

Depends on the users. If you are a geek, its not. Linux was used to be a not so user friendly operating system but these days companies like RedHat, Ubuntu are developing Linux user friendly. Although its still an operating system for power users and programmers beacause it is developed by such people only.

Something against Linux.

There are too many distributions. There are too many distributions available of Linux. At first you will be confused at to which distribution to use, to whomever you ask, he/she will refer to the distribution that he/she is using. So, it may take some hit and trial before you find the exact one for yourself. But too many distributions also means that "there is something for everyone".

Not very user friendly and confusing for beginners. Linux has always been a programmer's language and is developed by people of high programming skills. Yo may really be frustrated at first attempt or you will find yourself in a different territory if you are a windows user. Although there are a lots of efforts going on to make it user friendly, and the Distribution like ubuntu and mint are almost user friendly. But if you really a geek, you will adjust to it in days, if not hours. And by the way, doing something difficult is what defines a geek.

In the coming posts, there will be information about different Linux distributions and their installation processes along with download links and information.
