Debian.

Debian was started by Ian Murdock in August 1993. Just like other Linux Distributions, Debian is completely free, Open Source and uses Linux Kernel. Debian is produced and maintained by thousands of developers all around the world.

Why to choose Debian?

Maintained by users. The users around the world actively participating in maintaining and running of Debian project.

Support System. Debian has the best support system where the mails are replied within 15min or less.

Best packaging. Debian is packaged with some of the best application software for the user to make it easy to use. It contains about 29000 softwares, all free.

Easy installation. Debian is easy to install and can be installed through CD, DVD, DOS, floppies or even Network.

Source Code. If you are a developer, you can modify the underlying source code of Debian to suit your needs or to use the source code for study.

Easy upgrades. Debian provides an easy to upgrade environment. \

Bug tracking system. The bugs in operating system are not hidden. Rather they are made public so programmers across the world find a solution to it and general user can take suitable steps to avoid that bug.

Stability. Debian is very stable. There is almost no chance of crashing. You can even run the Debian OS for a year without rebooting your system. You will never find a situation of rebooting because of some sort pr program not responding or system crash.

Fast and easy on memory. Debian is fast and and require less memory for execution loading.

Drivers for most of the hardware is written by Linux/GNU community instead of hardware manufacturers. So user don't have to rely on vendors for the Drivers to run their system perfectly.

System Security. Patches are updated regularly and Unknown to many, anything sent over the net can be read by any machine between you and the receiver. Debian has packages of the famous GPG (and PGP) software which allows mail to be sent privately between users. In addition, ssh allows you to create secure connections to other machines which have ssh installed.

Of course Debian is not perfect.

Lack of popular commercial software. Although there are replacements for ms office with open office and oracle with MySql, still the need of high end commercial softwares are sometimes high. Various proprietary softwares are being developed on a daily basis for Debian use.

Hard to configure. Although Debian is much easier to Install, some user agree that its even easier than Windows at first place, but configuration of Debian is a tough process.

Not all Hardware is supported. Debian don't incorporates supports for all hardware, although effort is being made to make it compatible to almost harwares.
